AP Goalkeeping

Andy Phillips

Andy Phillips has coached and played for many professional and semi-professional clubs over the last 25 years. On leaving full-time football Andy went on to work as a Lecturer in sport and has improved the lives of 1000’s of young people whilst still playing non-league football. When Andy retired from playing football he wanted to pass on his knowledge and experience to a younger generation and give them the opportunities that he did not have access to as a young goalkeeper.

Andy is currently academy goalkeeper coach at York City FC.

What's Your Goal?

What’s important when looking for an activity for your child? The experience and reputation of the coach? What about specific programme goals such as fitness and building self-esteem? And of course don't forget about good old-fashioned fun and friendships!

At AP Goalkeeping children can have all of the above - and more. Started in 2012 by Andy, sessions take place in state-of-the-art venues in York and Scarborough.

Aiming High

Goalkeeping teaches children confidence on and off the field. Focus on teamwork, respect, and communication all combine to bring out the best in these aspiring young goalies. Group sessions at AP Goalkeeping begin at age 7 and go right up to age 16. One2One sessions are popular with older goalkeepers and even adults. Every week the group sessions work on a specific area of goalkeeping through a unique curriculum which has been developed by Andy.  However the main ethos of the goalkeeper sessions is to make individuals the best version of a goalkeeper they can be through tailored sessions.

All sessions are designed to be fun, safe and inclusive. Goalkeepers are a unique breed and AP encourage all goalkeepers to be supportive of other members of the group whatever their ability or stage in their development. All sessions are run by Andy who is a UEFA B qualified goalkeeper coach and its this personal approach which helps to bring out the best in every child.

At any stage of a goalkeepers development there are always aspects of the game that can be improved upon. Teams at grassroots level really benefit from having a designated goalkeeper receiving specialist coaching, as it is sometimes difficult to fully integrate them into team training sessions. The role of the goalkeeper has evolved and it so important to be more than just a good shot stopper.

Andy’s sessions work on the technical, tactical, mental and physical aspects. Sessions are carried out in a safe, fun and structured environment and participant numbers are limited to ensure maximum involvement.

'A specialist goalkeeper coach is vital at any level of football, from grass roots up to the professional game.'

Andy Phillips, AP Goalkeeping

Coming up very soon is the launch of ‘goalkeeper wars’, in association with HO soccer, a leading goalkeeper brand. This is a very exciting event which will bring together masterclasses, scouts from professional clubs as well as fun games. It's not to be missed.

New venues will be opening across Yorkshire very soon to keep up with demand.
