How to find work-life balance as a kids activity provider

If you are a small business owner or a club owner, you’ll know how scary it can feel to take a step back from your business and allow yourself some time off. This can especially be true if you are still very involved with the day-to-day runnings of your business. However, in order to run your club with confidence you do need to figure out how to maintain a healthy work-life balance. Plus, let’s be honest here, who wouldn’t love to be able to take a well-deserved holiday!

This blog is here to help you with examples and tips of how you can achieve and maintain a healthy work-life balance. After all, you can’t pour from an empty cup. So here are our top 10 tips for getting your kids activity club to a place where you can step away from the day-to-day, step into your role as a business owner and jump on a plane (if that’s your goal)!

[.pink__text]Hire the right person for the job[.pink__text]

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Hiring the right person for the job is super important when it comes to you being able to step away from doing the day-to-day tasks! So, what qualifies someone as the “right” person for the job? Of course it’s important that your staff has the experience and personality they will need for doing the job, but even more importantly, they should be echoing the ethos of your club. Your coaches and teachers will be the faces of your business, so hiring staff that will represent everything your club stands for will be crucial!

[.green__text]Develop systems and processes[.green__text]

Having an online booking software in place can seriously cut down the time you and your team will spend on admin tasks. Not only will it streamline your business operations, but it will free up hours and hours of time for you to focus on what really matters: growing your club and spotting new opportunities. Look for an online system that has the features you’ll need! A few examples of these are: online registrations, easy and secure payments, clear financial handling, and an overview of your club’s overall health. By spending your time more wisely, you’ll be able to find that balance between being a successful business owner and having a great personal life as well!

[.orange__text]Delegate responsibilities effectively[.orange__text]

As a club owner, it's important to practise delegating tasks and responsibilities to your staff. You can’t be everywhere and do everything at once, so you’ll need to trust your team to handle various aspects of club operations, like scheduling, admin, and class planning. Not only will that allow your team to develop a sense of ownership and responsibility, but it will free up your time and allow you to focus on the big-picture stuff - or take a well-deserved break!

[.pink__text]Train your team[.pink__text]

Our recent podcast guest, Jolly Jess from Showtime Circus, expressed the peace of mind that providing her staff members with training gave her. Ensuring that her team could confidently run the show without her managing it all behind the scenes, gave Jess the assurance she needed to step back from the business, and even explore new opportunities to franchise Showtime Circus! By giving your team the training they’ll need, you’ll have the confidence to leave your business in their capable hands.

[.blue__text]Set Boundaries[.blue__text]

We know how difficult it can be to put that phone down and avoid checking those work-related emails or messages. But trust us: It’s very rarely an emergency. As a business owner, you will most likely have been very involved in your business from the very start. However, you won’t be able to continue to manage everything going on in your club as it grows! So, you’ll need to establish clear boundaries between your work and personal life. Try defining specific working hours - and sticking to those.

[.orange__text]Don’t be afraid to take time off[.orange__text]

In order to avoid burnout, you’ll need to take a break every once in a while. Try to schedule regular breaks or holidays to give yourself time to relax and recharge. If you communicate your time off in advance and prepare your team for it, you should have no trouble being able to step away for a little bit. If you’re worried about leaving your business, try planning shorter, more local holidays first and then increase the time and distance. Even a short break can help rejuvenate your energy and perspective!

[.pink__text]Embrace technology[.pink__text]

In a world that is as digitally driven as it is today, you’ll need to utilise the technology you have available to you, in order to streamline and grow your business. Don’t be afraid to explore tools and software that will make your life easier by digitising your business processes! A good system shouldn’t be scary, it should be simple and make your life easier. It should help you to automate repetitive tasks, reduce administrative burdens and improve communication between you, your team and parents at your club. Most importantly: embracing and utilising technology will provide you with opportunities for growth!

[.green__text]Set realistic goals and expectations[.green__text]

At the end of the day, we’re all human. That’s why you’ll need to set realistic expectations on both yourself and your club. Avoid overloading your schedule or taking on too many projects at once! Instead, remember to allow yourself time to recover and prioritise your well being as well as your club’s. That’s how you’ll find a great work-life balance.

[.blue__text]Develop a business mindset[.blue__text]

You’ve most likely heard the tip: “Develop a business mindset” before. But how do you do that? Well, it’s about planning ahead and thinking of what is best for the future of your business, rather than what would be good or work right now. For example: when you first start running your kids club, you’ll likely be running the show almost entirely. From taking payments and creating registers to planning out the classes, it’s all on your plate. However, as your business grows, you’ll not be able to continue to do all of this and be everywhere at once! If you develop a business mindset where you see your kids' activity club as a business from the very beginning, you’ll find that developing a system is much smarter! You’ll need to consider if the decisions you make now will positively affect your club’s future. And that is the key to developing a business mindset for your club!
